Dean Murray for State Assembly

The 2011 legislative session was a busy and productive one in Albany. I was pleased that we were able to work with our Governor, in a bi-partisan manner, to accomplish quite a bit. We passed an on-time budget that actually cut spending for the first time in about 15 years. Enacted a 2% property tax cap aimed at bringing the runaway property taxes under control. We passed an ethics reform package that increases accountability among our elected officials and pushed through the repeal of the saltwater fishing license fee that had, so blatantly, targeted Long islanders. These were all big accomplishments, but there is much more to be done. While the tax cap will bring some relief to our taxpayers, we need to enact real, solid mandate relief to ease the unfair burden being placed on our school districts and local governments. The elimination of the unfair, job-killing, MTA payroll tax is still one of the top issuest of things that need to be done. While we made strides this year, we need to continue to work to make New York a more “business-friendly” state so we can attract companies of all sizes that will in turn bring, not just jobs, but good paying, career opportunities. I pledge that I will continue fighting to make New York a state that we can be proud of... a state that will once again live up to it's title of, the "Empire State".

Suffolk County is truly a great place to call home. Unfortunately, these are tough times for many families who are struggling to make ends meet and pay for rising property taxes as they fear for their jobs. As the politicians in state government endlessly bicker over trivial matters, the people on Main Street are suffering.

Being a small business owner myself, I know what it takes to create jobs, provide health care and other benefits for hard-working people. As your newly elected Assemblyman, I’ve been fighting for smaller and smarter government, lower taxes and putting an end to the wasteful spending that is mortgaging our children’s future here on Long Island. Whether it’s the unfair, job-killing, MTA payroll tax or the multitude of other taxes and fees imposed on businesses and taxpayers throughout the state, the tax and spend philosophy has to change.
